Picnic season in the UK is sporadic. There isn’t a particular month that shines brighter than the other, you just need to prepare yourself for a spontaneous afternoon here and there.

A few Sunday’s ago the sun came out so I made some last minute picnic plans with a friend. We made a quick dash to the supermarket for food essentials before heading off in the direction of our local park.

I had picked up a couple of picnic bits from HomeSense (aka the Mothership) the week prior, and items kept out from last summer that I still use throughout the year. If you’ve been following this corner of the blogosphere for a while, you’ll know my love runs deep for this home store – it’s always stocked with so many cute pieces and you can guarantee to find something for everyone’s taste and budget.

Kicking off our shoes, we laid out this gorgeous striped blanket* out on the grass and unpacked our picnic basket full of treats. After a quick ‘cheers’, we sipped our pink fizz from these pretty plastic detailed glasses*, perfect for picnics and alfresco dinners. We were so busy catching up and ushering away unwelcome dogs passing by to sniff our feast that we didn’t notice the sudden drizzle of rain. Sheltered underneath a tree, we were safe…for now.

Less than half an hour later – picture the two of us caught in torrential rain, with thunder and lightning intermittently joining in.

Luckily, we had devoured most of the nibbles but our pudding had to be eaten back in the car as we warmed up. Good old British summertime, eh?!

For more Pinterest-inspired and Instagram-worthy pieces, pop into your nearest HomeSense – hopefully July and August will be a little brighter for picnics and outdoor parties…
